Money and the Human Struggle
Presented by
Peter Ressler & Monika Mitchell Ressler
Peter and Monika discuss how to affect a change in the lives of individuals
through understanding the role that economics play in every human struggle including

A Values Discussion with Jean Houston
How can the un learn to discover the art of creating self-reliant community in a global age? This requires a
Move toward politeia, a greek word much richer than poli tics, which derives from it. Politeia is a civic
society carried to its utmost. I t implies that all free citizens are actively involved in creating and
maintaining their community, empowering each other to further their common social agenda.
Dr. Houston was the protégé of the late anthropologist Margaret Mead, who instructed her in the workings
Of organizations and power structures in many different cultures. With the late mythologist Joseph
Campbell, Jean Houston frequently co-led seminars and workshops aimed at understanding
Interrelationships between ancient myths and modern societies.

Protecting the "Treasures of the Earth": The World Heritage Convention as an enchanted Network?
with Guest Speaker
Terence Hay-Edie
The outlook of the unesco world heritage convention reflects a scale of
Universality that seeks to recognize natural, cultural and sacred sites of
paramount importance for all of humanity. However, who decides on what is to
be proposed, and on what terms? Drawing on ethnographic field work in Nepal,
India, China and Mali, the presentation will explore the possibility that world
Heritage is indeed a “memory for the world”, but sounds a note of caution on the
philosophical roots and power relations which seek to preserve such sites in
perpetuity.

The Realization of Inner and Outer Peace through the Martial Arts
In Commemoration of the INternational Year of Sport and Physical Education (IYSPE 2005)
Sport and physical education play a vital role at all levels of society.
For the individual, sport enhances one’s personal abilities, general health and self-knowledge.
On the national level, sport and physical education contribute to the economic and social growth,
improve public health, and bring different communities together. On the global level, if used
consistently, sport and physical education have a long-lasting positive impact on development,
public health, peace and the environment.
The Martial Arts has much to teach us as individuals and as a collective about preventing violence,
embracing tranquility, and ways to transform violence into a context for peace.
